This week I start rehearsing with Tacoma Opera for the second show of the season, Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. Tacoma Opera is presenting a double bill of Pagliacci and Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti – there is no chorus in the latter production so we choristers get to focus exclusively on Pagliacci. I’m looking forward to seeing familiar faces, but also to meeting our stage director and maestro who are making their TO debuts! I’m curious to see how the director treats Pagliacci, which is sometimes called a “tragedy disguised as a comedy” – it is a play within a play and the chorus acts as the audience, blissfully unaware of the real-life drama being acted out before them!
Pagliacci will play on March 11th and 13th at the Pantages Theatre in Tacoma – for tickets and information, visit www.tacomaopera.com.
